Elon Musk Reveals He Lives in an Airstream Trailer in Memphis

Elon Musk disclosed during a podcast appearance that his current residence is an Airstream trailer parked steps from xAI’s Colossus supercomputer center in Memphis, Tennessee. Fortune, Yahoo Finance, Business Insider, and other outlets reported the disclosure from an All-In podcast taping that aired in mid-September 2026.

Musk described his accommodations directly on the podcast, stating, “This is coming to you from the palace that I live in, which is an Airstream trailer.” The disclosure highlights a well-documented pattern of Musk adopting Spartan living conditions during intense operational pushes.

Why is Elon Musk living in an Airstream trailer?

Elon Musk is in Memphis to oversee xAI's rapid expansion of Colossus, a massive supercomputer center designed to provide computational power for Grok, xAI’s large language model. Fortune reported that the project has grown to include multi-billion-dollar deals to supply excess capacity to companies like Google and Anthropic, alongside plans announced in late July to build a fourth data center named Minihard.

SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell emphasized Musk's hands-on work ethic during operations, stating, “This is Elon, by the way, doing what people don’t believe he does. He sleeps on the factory floor. He’s in Memphis, helping build buildings.”

What other comparable living arrangements has Musk used?

Sleeping on-site during corporate crunches is a recurring theme in Musk's career history, documented across several decades:

• 1990s: Musk and his brother Kimbal slept in a tiny Palo Alto office for six months while building Zip2, showering at the YMCA.
• 1999: Slept under his desk most nights while launching X.com, later PayPal, after receiving $22 million from Compaq's acquisition of Zip2.
• 2017–2018: Slept 4 to 5 hours a night, often on the factory floor, during Tesla's Model 3 "production hell" target of 5,000 cars per week.
• 2020: Sold several luxury properties, including a $17 million Bel Air mansion bought in 2012 and a $32 million Silicon Valley estate, before moving to a rented $50,000 SpaceX house in Boca Chica, Texas.
• 2022: Slept on a couch in Twitter's seventh-floor library after purchasing the company during what he described to journalist Bari Weiss as a "code-red situation."

Fortune noted that Musk's current net worth sits at $917 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, following a brief 12-day period in June when he became the world's first trillionaire.

Who is disputing the living arrangement?

While Musk and multiple business outlets reported his residence in the Memphis trailer, Jalopnik disputed the characterization, running a headline stating that Elon Musk does not "live" in the trailer and citing movement logs from flight tracker ElonJet.

Neither Musk nor xAI disclosed the specific model of the Airstream trailer, and source materials do not state how long Musk plans to reside on the Memphis property.
